How to Clean Your Roof – The Basic and Complete Guide
Cleaning your own room is one of the easiest DIY things you can do around the house. Figuring out how to clean your roof can be done by reading this easy to read how to post, and actually completing the job can probably be done in a day. Follow these steps to get your roof clean without having to go the professional route.
COME UP WITH A PLAN
Before you head to the hardware store or pick up a ladder, you need a plan of action. Read this guide and figure out what you will need to do, and the supplies that you need.
CLEAN THE GUTTERS
This is the one step that most people do not think of. All of the water that is going down the roof will go into your gutters. If the gutters are clogged with leaves, it can be a mess. Make sure that the gutters are clean before cleaning the roof.
MAKE SURE YOU’RE SAFE
Before you get on the roof, make sure that you are going to be safe. This may require a safety harness or other precautions to prevent accidents.
GET SUPPLIES TOGETHER
Roof cleaning can be done with a low pressure power washer. Most people choose to purchase one of these as they can also use it to power wash their house, wash their car and so on. Power washers are available with a variety of settings for those that want a more versatile product.
You will also need to determine if you need a ladder or not. If you have a flat roof and easy access, you can probably get by without one. The same goes for small, one story homes. It’s up to you to decide if you will need a ladder.
You may want to pick up some cleaner as well. This is different for every person. Eco-friendly individuals that try to steer away from chemicals often opt for just using water to rinse the dirt off. Other people may choose a nice cleaning solution to remove roof stains. It depends on your household, if you have an aversion to using chemicals and cleaners, and just how dirty the roof is.
When picking up a cleaner, keep in mind that certain cleaners may damage nearby plant life when they run off the roof.
If you are using a cleaning solution, mix it in a spray pump, such as a bug sprayer. Then, get on the roof and spray a light coating all over the shingles. Start at the top and work your way down.
After that, let the cleaning solution sit for the recommended amount of time. This varies, but is usually approximately fifteen minutes.
A CLEAN ROOF IN JUST ONE DAY
After this, you’re all done. It’s never been easier to clean a roof yourself, and, as you can see, you can easily complete this job in less than one day. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact our support staff.
Power washers are both good and bad for cleaning roofs. If the setting is too high, it can break the seal in between shingles, resulting in those shingles flying off of the roof during the next wind storm. The key is to use the lowest setting.
When using your power washer, gently rinse the cleaning solution off of the shingles. Once again, start at the top and work your way down. Pay special attention to areas where dirt and debris can collect, such as those creases that are on shingles.
